As dawn breaks across the hills, a mob of dairy cows move quietly along a well-trodden path, heading toward fresh pasture after morning milking. “Up girls!” (the familiar call) gently breaks the silence, urging the herd onward. Dawn is a magical time: the sky glows with promise, and the land slowly begins to stir.

Walking behind this herd on a farm in Pirinoa, South Waiarapa, New Zealand, always offered space for reflection. A peaceful pause in an otherwise physical day. Now, from a distance, those routines feel almost dreamlike. Yet, amongst the fast-paced urban world, the steady work of farmers and animals continue behind the scenes. This painting honours the everyday work done around the world to sustain us.
